What Diseases Do Mosquitoes Spread?
Mosquitoes are notorious for the diseases they’ve spread across the world. Each year, more than 700,000 people die from illnesses contracted from vectors. These diseases have disproportionately affected people living in tropical and subtropical climates, but are a global threat. The most common diseases that mosquitoes carry are:
- Yellow fever
- West Nile virus
- Rift Valley fever
- Zika virus
- Chagas disease
What Kinds of Mosquitoes Transmit Disease?
The three types of mosquitoes that are responsible for spreading diseases are Anopheles, Culex, and Aedes mosquitoes. There are multiple subspecies within these families that are capable of transmitting disease. Fortunately, there are also many types of mosquitoes that are incapable of transmitting disease and are primarily a nuisance pest. Here in El Paso, we have had cases of the Aedes mosquito reported.
