Millipedes in El Paso TX and Anthony NM
Millipedes can have anywhere from 30 to more than 100 pairs of legs depending on the species. There are nearly 1,000 species across the U.S. alone, making them extremely common throughout the nation. They are usually brown or black in color and typically prefer dark, damp areas where they can hide. Some species are known to give off a foul-smelling fluid, which can sometimes be toxic to small animals or pets.
Millipedes are often found in areas with high moisture and decaying vegetation, including under trash, in grass piles, flower beds, and more. They are known to be decomposers, making them beneficial in your garden. If outside conditions are too hot, dry, or wet, they may make their way indoors where they are certainly not welcomed by homeowners due to their frightening appearance.
Millipede Control and Prevention
Preventing millipede infestations require some of the same methods as preventing other types of pests. It’s important to always seal your home by installing well-fitting screens and sealing cracks or holes. In addition, fixing leaky pipes and ensuring good ventilation can keep moisture problems in check. If you have millipedes in your home, it’s likely time to call for professional help.
