When is Termite Season in El Paso?

Termites are active throughout the year causing pest problems for homeowners in El Paso.  However, because termites tend to swarm, reproduce, and build new colonies in spring, many people believe termites are only active during the warmer months.

Unfortunately, termites have a life cycle that enables them to be active throughout every season, making them a threat to homes year-round. Although you may never observe swarming termites in the spring or summer, they are still active in the fall and winter, foraging and reproducing. Due to their ability to stay active in colder months, termites are one of the few pests that present a threat to homeowners in El Paso all year long.

What Weather Do Termites Prefer?

Termites will not survive in freezing temperatures and usually prefer daytime temperatures between 70 – 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Subterranean termites prefer mild weather and can live in mud or sand. Both of these facts make El Paso’s mild weather an ideal spot for termites to thrive. As a rule, termites swarm on warm afternoons with calm winds after rainfall, making spring and summer in El Paso their ideal swarming environment.

Where Do Termites Go in the Winter?

Termites activity is ongoing during winter months, even in the coldest weather:

  1. During the fall, termites will search out wood or soil locations that they can easily tunnel through to protect themselves from colder temperatures.
  2. To evade freezing temperatures, they will delve deeper into the soil, however, the warm interior of your home has everything termites need to survive the winter.
  3. The queen termite will continue to produce and lay eggs on mild days, throughout the winter months.
  4. Even though you may not observe swarming termites between December and February, termites are always actively reproducing and tunneling through wood.

Are Termites More Dangerous in the Spring and Summer?

Termites present a threat to El Paso property owners all year long. Although visible termites are seen during the spring and summer as they take flight to reproduce, they can infest and feed on wood in or around your home throughout the year. Considering that termite activity can progress for years without ever being detected, it is wise to perform routine inspections on your property year-round in order to catch an infestation before it begins.
